Comentarios: Harnett was the leading American trompe l'úil painter of the 19th century, influencing a legion of artists, including Peto, Haberle, and Chalfant (see entries). However, during his lifetime he was critically unpopular even though he attracted a large audience and rich patrons. Beginning about 1905, a number of canvases that were actually by John Peto were sold bearing the forged signature of Harnett. This led to confusion between the two artists. His reputation was revived by an exhibition at the Downtown Gal., NYC, in 1929.
