Comentarios: A nephew of James Alden (see entry), he joined the Pacific Coast Survey in 1854, which was commanded by his uncle. Until 1857 he worked as a topographer with his uncle, continuing in the same capacity for four years at the Canadian border. His watercolors, said to be unsophisticated, are nevertheless exacting in detail and of great historical importance. He served in the Civil War and later lived in Annapolis and Washington, DC.
