Although generally considered safer (and less volatile) investments, the Modern Masters failed to generate the estimated results at Christie’s and Sotheby’s May sales in New York, generating a combined total of just $285.65m from their Impressionist & Modern Art sessions.

Contemporary Art sales in London [01/02/2010]

Christie’s and Sotheby’s apparent price optimism for their Impressionist and Modern sales on 2 and 3 February 2010 is equally visible in the catalogues for their Contemporary Art sales on 10 and 11 February. Results of the Contemporary art sales: seriously off the boil [15/02/2009]

A week of sales in London Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and Phillips de Pury & Co tested the resilience of the contemporary art market which has been the most speculative and volatile compartment of the market over the last few years.

The New York School [26/06/2008]

The European artists who sought refuge in New York during the Second World War helped stoke up a simmering US art scene. A resurgence in US painting was in the making. A resurgence that would be abstract and manifest in two key movements: Action painting, consisting of gestural painting that emphasised the physical act of painting, and Color Field painting, characterised by large, flat areas of vibrant colour conducive to meditation.

Christie’s confirms its leading position in contemporary art [21/05/2007]

The thrill of the New York contemporary art auctions is no longer the thousand dollar sale but those achieving millions of dollars. At the height of the May sales, a work by Mark ROTHKO went for 65 million dollars, becoming the most expensive post-war work in the market. These days the Sotheby’s and Christie’s contemporary art auctions are raising proceeds in excess of those on “Impressionist & Modern Art”. In 138 lots, the 15 and 16 May sales generated, all costs included, 639,528,400 million dollars, compared with 515,012,000 million dollars on 123 lots the previous week in the “Impressionist & Modern Art” sales.

Each artist makes their own, large or small, contribution to the total market. And ranking them by auction turnover gives a good indication of market conditions, preferences and trends. Every year Artprice ranks artists by this criterion.

The New York School [02/01/2007]

After World War II, American painting was revived by a number of young artists. Influenced by surrealism, they eschewed reality and began a free style of painting that developed into two basic trends: “Action painting” and “Colorfield painting”.

Christie’s leads the public auction market in 2006 [22/11/2006]

USD 866 million from six sessions – that is the total revenue figure generated by Christie’s from its two thematic auctions held in New York this November, Impressionist & Modern Art and Post-War & Contemporary Art. The sum is an unprecedented figure in the history of auction results. By comparison, Sotheby’s generated USD 476 million from auctions with exactly the same themes.

TOP 10 ARTISTS [05/02/2006]

The Top 10 artists grossed USD 576 million in 2005, compared to USD 393 million in 2003, a figure that represents 13.6% of the total art auction market. Unusually, a contemporary artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and an old master, Canaletto, were among the top sellers. The top three names however are unchanged…

Abstract expressionism, fetching the highest prices at contemporary art auctions [18/05/2004]

Abstract expressionism, the most influential American art movement of the 1960s, is topping the bill at the most prestigious contemporary art auctions. After occupying pride of place at the MoMA (New York) for over fifty years, Number 12 (1949), a “drip painting” on paper by Jackson POLLOCK found a buyer at Christie’s on 11 May 2004 at USD 10 million. The next day, the euphoria continued with more extremely high bids including an artist’s record for Clyfford STILL’s 1960-F which went under the hammer at USD 2.8 million.

International contemporary art driven by Phillips, De Pury & Luxembourg [23/11/2003]

Contemporary art auctions in New York reassure the market with 34 records in three days [24/11/2002]

In a tense economic climate, contemporary art auctions in New York are proving stronger than modern art and impressionist art sales. The evening auctions may have been unexceptional. But Sotheby’s and Christie’s still managed some reassuring surprises, generally in the less prestigious later sessions, when prices for some artists showed real growth and some of them turned out to be impressive records.
