Comentarios: He deserted from the German army as a young man, fleeing to France, where he began his studies in art. He supported himself in his trade as a bookbinder, and in 1881 came to the U.S. for the first time, visiting his sister in Chicago. He later taught in Decatur, IL, but went to teach in London, England shortly after the turn of the century for two years. Upon his return to the US, he taught in Denver, CO, moving to Pasadena, CA, in 1908. Besides his successful career in teaching art, he continued to paint portrait commissions, figures and landscapes en plein-air until his death.
