Comentarios: Fourth son of the Scottish industrialist-reformer Robert Owen. Came to U.S. in 1827 with his father and brothers, settling in New Harmony. First took up printing and lithography there and in NYC but gave them up to study chemistry in London, 1831-32. Returned to New Harmony in 1833; in 1837 began the serious study of geology and the rest of his life was spent in making geological surveys of Indiana and other areas of the mid and southwest. His reports were largely illustrated by himself, although his brother, Richard Owen (see entry), did contribute some illustrations. David Owen also painted portraits and landscapes as an amateur.
