Comentarios: Took up the study of drawing after an accident in 1843 interrupted his other studies. One of his books on the subject, Easy Lectures in Landscape, ran to five editions by 1856. Studied medicine in NYC, receiving his degree in 1852, and in 1853 became a ship's surgeon on the Panama route to California. It was during this period that he executed a view of San Francisco (1855), known through a lithograph by C. Parsons. Otis himself later published an Illustrated History of the Panama Railroad (1861) which contained two California views. In 1860 Otis opened his practice in NYC and served as police surgeon, 1861-71.
