Comentarios: During his service with the corps of topographical engineers, he made several expeditions into the West, the reports of which were illustrated by his own sketches. In 1848-50 Abert was assistant in drawing at West Point. During the 1850s he worked on the improvement of Western rivers. He was wounded in the Civil War and retired with the rank of colonel in 1864. After the war he became professor of mathematics and drawing at the University of Missouri.
