Comentarios: He entered the U.S. Navy in 1828. Accompanying Charles Wilkes on his exploring expedition of 1838-42, he helped to survey and chart the Sacramento River. From 1848 to 1860 he commanded the party surveying the West Coast from Mexico to Canada. After service in both the Mexican and Civil Wars, Alden retired from the Navy in 1873 and lived in San Francisco until his death.
