Comentarios: The son of a successful homeopathic physician, he won some acclaim in Germany before coming to the U.S. where he became a prof. of languages, Univ. of Columbus. While in Philadelphia, 1857, he exhibited a Berks County hay-making scene. Behne and his wife, the former Julia May Keim, moved to Cuba until unrest in the region forced them to return to Germany in 1867. In 1874 they returned to Reading, Pa., where Behne continued to paint local scenes. They returned to Munich in 1876, allowing Behne to continue painting in the German countryside until his death; he was buried outside Munich.
