Comentarios: Began as a tinsmith but took up portrait painting about 1835, and except for a few professional visits to Cincinnati (1842-43) and NYC he spent the rest of his life in Indianapolis. He became that city's first important professional artist. In 1853-54 he collaborated with Henry Waugh (see entry) on a temperance panorama but he was also known for his landscapes and fruit still lifes. Cox had a long career and was a significant teacher with many pupils, including Joseph O. Eaton, John Henry Niemeyer, Lew Wallace and James F. Harris.
