Comentarios: The most famous member of the Moran family of artists, his family immigrated to Philadelphia when he was a boy (via Maryland). On his 1862 trip to England, he was greatly influenced by the atmospheric paintings of Turner. He visited Europe again in 1866-67, meeting Corot and making studies of Venice. Moran's fame rests largely on his panoramic oil paintings of scenes in the Far West, including Yellowstone Park, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon of the Colorado. He also worked extensively in watercolor. The artist traveled West many times: he was with W.H. Jackson (see entry) on the Hayden U.S. Geological Survey of Yellowstone in 1871, returning there again in 1873 with Major John Wesley Powell's surveying party; he visited Yosemite, 1872; the Grand Canyon, 1873; and the Grand Tetons, 1879, and continued to make many more trips before finally settling in Santa Barbara, CA, in 1916. In between however, Moran lived in Newark, NJ, and NYC before building a house in 1884 on East Hampton, Long Island, which became the first permanent residence by any artist in the area (he first visited there in 1878). Mt. Moran bears his name. Mary Nimmo Moran, whom he married in 1862, was also an artist (see entry). Signature note: He is most often recognized for his conjoined "TM" monogram, which he began using in 1873. From c.1911-20s, he signed some his his paintings with the impression of his thumbprint.
