Comentarios: A New Hope (Bucks County) Impressionist and acknowledged leader of the group that included Daniel Garber, Walter Schofield, and Robert Spencer. He was especially known for his Delaware River area winter scenes. Redfield began as an academic figure and portrait painter but during his time in France in the 1890s began painting outdoors at Barbizon and Pont-Aven. A very spontaneous, vigorous plein-air painter, he was able to start and finish a painting all at "one go." Later in life, in a concern for his reputation, Redfield burned hundreds of paintings that he deemed to be of lesser quality. He won numerous awards and was extremely successful in his own time but was neglected during the decade following his death. He is now recognized as one of the leading American Impressionists. Signature note: Until c.1893, he signed as "E. Willis Redfield." From c.1893-c.1905, he signed as "E.W. Redfield" in upper/lower case letters; thereafter in block letters. His worked was often faked during his own lifetime. Teaching: PAFA.
