Comentarios: A popular member of the Hudson River School, it was not until until 1855 that he dedicated himself fully to a painting career. In 1858 he opened his studio in NYC, and in 1859 he made the European tour in company with Sanford R. Gifford. He spent much of his time at Rondout and in the nearby Catskills, often traveling with Worthington Whittredge. His works were typically small in size, and he often included passages of poetry when exhibiting them. His painting style changed gradually from the traditional Hudson River style to incorporate the techniques of the Impressionists.
