Comentarios: His aptitude as a stone worker attracted the attention of Erastus D. Palmer, one of the early American sculptors. In 1871, he was a founding member of the Salmagundi Club, in New York. This bohemian" group held their first regular meetings at Hartley's sculpture studio, where they critiqued each other's works and then launched into boxing matches. He married George Inness' daughter.
