While a student he was told he was colorblind, a mistake not uncovered for 30 years. As a result, he painted mostly in black and white. After he discovered the error, his work took on more brilliant hues. He traveled extensively, illustrating the wilderness of the Canadian West. Went by dog sled over 1,000 miles with the Royal Mounties, 1,200 miles by snowshoe, and 3,300 by canoe. He summered at the Old Lyme Colony.
