Comentarios: Painter of the Hudson River landscape and the South. After coming to America with his family in 1831, he grew up in Hudson, NY, and Penfield, GA. In 1838 (at age 18), he published an illustrated guide to flower painting. At the time, Richards was living in Augusta, GA, where he offered instruction in landscape, fruit, flower, and marine painting, and also contributed travel pictures to local periodicals. In 1842, he illustrated a book on Georgia, containing what are among the earliest landscapes of that state. He painted and taught in Charleston, SC, 1843-44, and later in 1844 went to study in NYC. Richards established a studio in that city but also began painting in the Hudson River Valley, and by 1848 was part of the growing art colony in Palenville, NY, at the southern end of the Kaaterskill Cove near Catskill. Others painting there included Asher B. Durand, John Frederick Kensett, David Johnson, and Richard William Hubbard. Richards also painted in the area of Lake George, NY, and traveled widely in the U.S. and Europe. In 1857 he published an illustrated handbook of American travel. He also contributed illustrated travel articles to several American magazines. Teaching: NY Univ., 1867-87.
