Comentarios: During a period when most artists could make a living only from portraiture, Doughty was one of the first American artists to devote himself to landscape painting. He was first apprenticed to a leather merchant and worked as a leather currier in Philadelphia until 1820. Thereafter, he quickly won critical acclaim for his lyrical and bucolic landscapes of the rivers and mountains of Pennsylvania, New York"s Hudson River Valley, and New England. His compositions are often marked by their "quiet," usually showing a solitary figure, sailboat, or cottage. After 1841, he lived in NYC except for a brief stay in New Orleans (1844), a second trip to Europe (1845-46) and a brief residence in western New York (1852-54). A prolific artist, Doughty exhibited frequently and sold many paintings through the Apollo Association and the American Art-Union. He was among the earliest artists to reproduce his landscapes as lithographs, in his popular series, Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports, a monthly published in Philadelphia (1830-34) with his brother, John.
