The press release of Art Beijing 2017

The Art Beijing fair is scheduled to be held on April 29 to May 2, 2017. This brings it to its 12th consecutive exhibition organized under the Art Beijing brand. Time flies and completes a full cycle of twelve years during which a toddler has grown into a teenager. In just twelve years, Art Beijing has experienced the rise and fluctuation of the art market, and the eruption and cool-down of financial crisis, as well as its fair share of criticisms and praises. Now without further ado, here it is.

Presenting the Diversity of Art

With the core idea of being “Locally Based and Asia-Oriented”, Art Beijing 2017 consists of contemporary art, design, classic and public art. We have selected a diverse selection of art from over 160 exhibitors from 15 different countries and regions. Facing the fluctuation of the contemporary art market, it has steadily maintained the same scale and style as past exhibitions and has integrated all significant artistic forces in China. Art Beijing has also bonded with galleries in the process of development. This makes any and all efforts in supporting the operation and development of galleries possible, through the platform offered by the Art Gallery Association. (AGAB) The fair will be held to not only provide the support and services for the galleries during this exhibition, but to appear as a regular platform to divert all kinds of resources and traffic into the regular exhibitions and operations of galleries. Hence, Art Beijing will, as a whole, fuel the prosperity of the art market and promote the penetration of arts into the society and people’s lives. In the future, Art Beijing will also witness the development of arts and the art market in China from the perspective of galleries.

China has developed one of the world’s largest art markets with its incomparable breadth and depth. However, the purchasing power in China shouldn’t be ignored by the world. With its profound culture and core values, the art market of China is comparably distinctive to that of others globally. Additionally, the situation of quick success in the Chinese art market through replicating the western operation mechanism and artistic style at the beginning of its development has completely vanished. There are however some notable differences between the artworks offered in comparison to the demand of the art market becoming more professional, rational and diverse in the current economic cycle. Therefore, how to provide a large variety of high-level works based on the market demand while keeping it professional has become not only a question to be answered by galleries and other entities, but also an issue to be studied and should be put under consideration from the fair in the intermediate market between primary and secondary markets.

During the selection of galleries and reviews of art pieces, Art Beijing has taken into account the changes in the demand for art, and has confirmed that the Classical Beijing and Art Beijing are to be held in the same pavilion and platform, as the previous arrangement of the exhibition’s layout and boundaries were not so clearly laid out. Furthermore, artworks are exhibited in different areas based on their style in an attempt to enrich and diversify the exhibition.

Special Division - Find

Art Beijing first appeared at a time when it was considered rare to consider a gallery as an exhibitor in China, so rare in fact that it was considered groundbreaking to even organize and host a gallery fair in the mainland. Based on the development laws of the mature art markets and the growing rise of collectors in China, it was an inevitable trend to follow for the development of galleries in the primary art market. The appearance of Art Beijing must be best oriented to promote the development of galleries with an agency mechanism to a large degree. Luckily, we grasped the opportunity during the rapid development of galleries to grow and advance with new galleries. Today, galleries have become the most important support in discovering great artists and to nurture their growth. More and more galleries have scattered throughout Beijing and welcome have had more and more visitors learning and appreciate art at its highest level.

Art Beijing has kept the principle of taking galleries as its exhibitors for years and has witnessed the gradual standardization, growth and expansion of numerous emerging galleries into influential art institutions. The “Find” program that ensures support for new galleries will be expanded by Art Beijing will be 1.5x bigger in 2017 to promote emerging artists and projects in Asia together with 17 different galleries in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Wuhan and Tokyo including EGG Gallery, Hunsand Space, Tong Gallery + Projects, Yamamoto Gendai and URANO.

By introducing a variety of artistic forms such as painting, imagery, installations, photography, and graffiti, this will create all sorts of new Asian elements to the fair and enable collectors and visitors alike to understand and learn about the new look and new development of Asian art.

Special Division - “AISA plus

Art Beijing embraces the qualities of Beijing as it was born and developed here in the city. In China, Beijing is certainly a center for the arts, as well as a center for creation and transaction of artworks, and accommodates the largest number of artists, galleries, auction houses and other artistic forces. Hence, it has not only become a place displaying the latest development of art in China, but also gradually become a metropolis for the culture and arts in the whole of Asia and has presented the current situation to the whole world.

For the increasing homogeneity of art exhibitions in other regions of Asia, Art Beijing has always been locally based to assume the responsibility of demonstrating and continuing the core spirit of eastern and Asian arts. The “ASIA plus” will be divided into two parts, i.e. Asian Galleries with International Presence and themed exhibitions, which mainly relies on galleries in China, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea, which consist of Hive Center for Contemporary Art, Platform China, Eslite Gallery, Taka Ishii Gallery, Tokyo Gallery + BTAP, and Arario Gallery, all with an aim to present the diverse artistic forms in Asia. Among them, the themed exhibition The Paralleled Worlds in Asia will invite 7 Chinese and Japanese artists, including Wu Jian’an, Takahiro Iwasaki and Kishio Suga, which will have their works exhibited at La Biennale di Venezia 2017. Also making an appearance will be Ji Dachun, Liu Xiaodong, Motohiko Odani and Wang Qingsong, whose works have already been exhibited at La Biennale di Venezia. Furthermore, the Artist will work with 7 professional and senior galleries in Asia to display the development of contemporary art in Asia and its trend, to reveal the internal differences and links of the Eastern Asian Cultural Community in terms of art.

Special ExhibitionXiaowei Hutong No. 5 the Third Exhibition

To advocate and carry forward the true spirit of art, Art Beijing will continue the special exhibition of Xiaowei Hutong, and host the Xiaowei Hutong No. 5 the Third Exhibition with Hongkun Museum of Fine Art. The reason behind this is to show how people of the Chinese Academy of Art have persisted and how they have carried forward the central spirit of art for generations, while dealing with numerous issues at different stages of social development. Therefore, this exhibition for the academy is expected to demonstrate the judgment and requirements of art academies with regard to professionalism in art, so as to provide a criterion for collectors and visitors to review the artworks and to use as a reference for any potential art collections.

Design Beijing

To further reinforce the concept of artistic design, Art Beijing continues the brand “Design Beijing” and has opened a dedicated pavilion under the theme of “Art · Design · Life” to find an accurate position between art and design in a way to offer more choices for collectors. However, it does generate a lot of effort to lead the focus of collectors back into the world of art and life without being restricted by the age, category or concept. Art Beijing aims to discover more details of the emerging demand for its down-to-earth operation, and then find a diverse range of works at various levels to satisfy the demand. By adjusting itself continuously to the increasing market demand in the future, it will become a bridge between art institutions and demand, so as to practice the concept of “Grand Fine Art”.

Public Art

Art promotion has been trying to find a way to introduce art by getting into the public and public space. As a matter of fact, Art Beijing is has dedicated itself to the practice of public art and art education in recent years. In art park projects and other relevant themed exhibitions, Art Beijing has demonstrated its advantage of utilizing the place and platform for the experimentation and exploration of “Art in Public Space”, which cannot be duplicated by any other exhibitions, and in turn also provides a practical example for art to enter the public’s everyday life in a more natural way.

Extending the Value of Art

Today, the age of mobile internet has arrived. Artworks are not limited to the physical existence of paintings or sculptures, but consist of images circulating in the virtual world. Through the circulation of images, artworks will be also affected by gaining more attention and praise. As a trading platform of artworks, Art Beijing has also gathered the most categories of artistic contents and attached more importance on to how to delve into the abundant content. This then promotes excellent artworks to get more attention and combines more resources, so as to help art adjust to the changing form of communication. From the in-depth cooperation with Aliyu, an IP trading platform affiliated with Alibaba, Art Beijing will open up an online channel for copyright transaction in 2017. This will utilize the advantageous traffic of the grand platform and gain a more in depth understanding into the value of copyright of artworks used in images. By virtue of marginal effect including development of derivatives and image licensing, etc., Art Beijing will expand the channel for operation of galleries, thus making it convenient method to introduce artworks into the public life.

While solidifying and strengthening its cooperation with traditional media, Art Beijing has also attached much importance to developing new media, which not only provides more possibilities and spaces for exploring and cultivating artistic contents, but also improves its value to the communication thanks to all the abundant contents. Art Beijing attracts more valuable artistic contents through its platform, and relies on these contents to strengthen the cooperation with commercial brands, in a bid to promote the upgrade and development of the art market through emerging forces outside the artistic circle. Every year, Art Beijing receives the support from influential sponsors, which will be continued as a tradition, so it will constantly explore and expand the model for brand implantation.

Nowadays, a profound reform is happening to art and the art market, so Art Beijing is continuously adjusting its planning and business to the reform, with the desire to present these artistic features of China to Beijing and the whole world in the next 12 years.
