ART ÉLYSÉES – ART & DESIGN

A MODERN & CONTEMPORARY ART FAIR

A TIMELESS AND UNIQUE ART AND DESIGN EVENT |

19TH — 23RD OCTOBER 2017 — PARIS

Art Élysées–Art & Design is one of the major events during the Parisian Art Week, which takes place every year in October. The fair contributes to the capital’s artistic dynamism and activity. Art Élysées stands apart from other fairs by offering reliable assets, valuable works of art and an alternative to the current art market. Through its unique identity and strong stand on art, the fair is a key event for art aficionados and collectors. The Art Élysées–Art & Design fair showcases an exceptional range of art. Art Élysées is the only fair to present 4 different sections, each under an ephemeral pavilion set up along the Avenue des Champs- Élysées. Both French and foreign galleries present a substantial selection of works in response to the market’s current demands. During each edition the fair renews coherent dialogue between modern and contemporary art and 20th century design. Contemporary artists in constant motion can be found next to some of the greatest references that have marked art history of the 20th century. Effective and attractive business opportunities; Art Élysées is a key fair for buyers and art professionals.

4 PAVILLONS, A SYNERGY OF SKILLS

Art Élysées thrives on remarkable dynamics: the fair is now composed of four pavilions that house four different sections: modern art, contemporary art, urban art and design. For this 11th edition the urban art section will still take place within the 8e Avenue Pavilion but is now included within the Art Élysées fair, at the same ranks as the other sections. All four pavilions are aligned from place de la Concorde to place Clemenceau and this creates a clear, enjoyable visit.

The design section, near the Grand Palais, is a striking assembly that gathers a dozen of galleries representing 20th century furniture. Wonderful interior decor, Scandinavian furniture and objects: a space where great names of French, Italian and Nordic design coexist.

In 2016, the organizers offered a larger range by showcasing contemporary design with VIA. This year the fair is happy to present Atelier Jespers and Carré Rive Gauche.

For the next edition, the design section aims at current trends and offers all visitors a wider range, with the participation of the Carré Rive Gauche which will present a selection of pieces by a dozen galleries that are members. The scenography is by Géraldine Prieur and Sylvie Desormière from Galerie Studio Rouge Absolu.

ART ÉLYSÉES-ART & DESIGN’S VISION: A TIMELESS EVENT THAT REINVENTS ITSELF EACH YEAR

With its eleven years of existence, during each edition the fair offers a selection of galleries that exhibit quality works. It is a place in which exchanges are smooth and where visitors can meet artists, museums, foundations and cultural institutions… Since its creation, the fair welcomes inside its pavilions exhibitions that are institutional, often exclusive or private collections.

Seven years ago, the organizers created a third pavilion dedicated to 20th century design. Four years later the 8e Avenue art show appeared, dedicated to present-day contemporary art: the first fair to attribute its own section to urban art galleries that is now part of Art Élysées fourth pavilion. From paintings of Old Masters to illustrations by emerging artists, Art Élysées is also a sophisticated selection of 20th century furniture to design from the young contemporary scene. Often relegated

to an art of the streets, the organizers chose to present urban art on the same page as the other artistic currents. From the informed collector, to young art lovers to investors, the fair is for all tastes.

EXHIBITIONS

For this 11th edition, the organizers have set up different events within the fairgrounds, such as the exclusive exhibition by the artist Fred Kleinberg: “Odyssey”, in the art section (pavilion A).

Within the design section (pavilion C), the public will discover two exhibitions: rare pieces of work from Belgian designers presented by Jean-François Declercq, founder of Atelier Jespers, the arts center in Bruxelles. The second exhibition will show objects from Jean-Bernard Hebey’s private collection: media man, radio producer and TV program creator, he is also owner of one of the world’s greatest collections of industrial design which was presented at Musée des années 30

during the exhibition “Esthétique Médiatique”.

Along with the magazine ArtsHebdoMedias, Art Élysées invite you to the 8e Avenue pavilion, in order to discover Mobile Art. Enhanced paintings, applications that are works of art, artistic QR codes… an exclusive space dedicated to contemporary creation. The founder of ArtsHebdoMédias turns into a mediator and curator for this special exhibition.

ODYSSEY

An exhibition by Fred Kleinberg on the Art Élysées fair | art section (Pavilion A)

For its 11th edition, the Art Élysées fair is proud to present Fred Kleinberg’s exclusive exhibition, a moving testimony of his immersion in refugee camps. Faced with the disturbing global tendency of human transhumance, this artistic initiative aims to report on the migratory phenomenon that is shaking up the contemporary world.

Focusing on the world’s most pressing questions, Fred Kleinberg, as a painter, paid regular visits to refugee camps, in collaboration with the NGO Médecins du Monde: in the Calais Jungle, in the Grande Sainte camps, on the island of Lesbos in the camps of Karatepe and Moria. His artistic project reports with sensitivity this exodus, a worldwide phenomenon which reflects on the plague of the century.

Fred Kleinberg produced an exclusive series of large fomat paintings and drawings after meeting refugees. The production of this series of works resulted from human encounters, tales of life experiences, geographical shifts, all of which contributed to his creations: from pictures taken on the spur of a moment to live sensations. All of these personal experiences proved to be necessary in the creation of this testimonial project of an artist.

During his travels, he recorded the sounds of this odyssey: interviews of migrants, stories from volunteers and humanitarian coordinators, sounds from the landscape and the daily lives of refugee camps. A soundtrack that goes along with the works of art, was created in collaboration with the musician François-Régis Matuszenski.

Willing to contribute to the humanitarian aid using his artistic skills, Fred Kleinberg organizes in collaboration with the local NGOs creative workshops during each of his visits.

This artistic and human adventure federates around it a shared vision of existence, common human values, of responsible and social commitment. To a greater extent, this project sheds light on the refugee crisis and to the question “in what way do art and humanitarian aid work together to open up a new perspective on migration?”.

A number of public figures and institutions support this project: M. Jack Lang, President of l’Institut du Monde Arabe, Ms Agnès B and the endowment fund Agnès B, and the NGO Medecins du Monde.

Odyssey, a travelling exhibition.

The total body of his works was intended to be a travelling exhibition. The technical realization of this project was enabled by Anagraphis.

In September 2017, a special edition of Artension will be published and the issue goes together with his exhibitions.

• Official exhibition during the Art Elysées fair from October 19th till 23rd, 2017.

• At Musée du Barreau de Paris from October 25th till December 30th, 2017.

• At l’Institut du Monde Arabe (IMA) in February and Mars 2018.

ART ÉLYSÉES EXHIBITION | DESIGN SECTION

FOCUS ON CONTEMPORARY BELGIAN DESIGN WITH ATELIER JESPERS

This October 2017, at the invitation of Art Élysées, Atelier Jespers will present a selection of Belgian designers from several generations. Art Élysées contributes to the artistic and cultural dynamic of the city of Paris. Since its creation, the show has welcomed exhibitions within its pavilions that were often unpublished, institutional or from private collections. Atelier Jespers takes this opportunity to present, outside its own walls, all of the rich design talent Belgium has to offer since decennia.

ATELIER JESPERS, A CENTER FOR ARTS

Built in 1928 by Victor Bourgeois for his sculptor friend Oscar Jespers, the workshop operated until Oscar’s death in 1970. At the end of the 1920s, this space, which occupies over 400 m2, was a prime meeting place for Europe’s artistic avant-garde.

In September 2015, Jean-François Declercq decided to transform the

workshop into an arts center, dedicated to meetings and exhibitions. Along with the name Atelier Jespers, the building reconnects with its initial mission: “to showcase”. A modernist gem, the building now welcomes various artistic projects: from design, to art and even sound, each show reignites the initial aspiration to spark dialogue between Victor Bourgeois intent and current works of art.

JEAN-FRANÇOIS DECLERCQ’S SELECTION FOR ART ÉLYSÉES

After two years of existence, Atelier Jespers gladly presents for the first time abroad, a cabinet composed of furniture in the strict sense of design: furniture, textiles and lighting. Taking a completely contemporary approach, the point is not to showcase historic design but rather to encourage a discovery of the current scenery of high level Belgian creations. We are not talking industrial design on a global scale, but a meticulous and personal creation reaching the limits of contemporary design that show the manual craftsmanship and intellect of multiple generations of Belgian designers.

A couple of said designers, Vladimir Slavov (lighting), Ben Storms (furniture), Casimir Reynders (furniture), Gerard Kuijpers (furniture, sculptures) have had the opportunity to exhibit their works at Atelier Jespers. Others such as, Pol Quadens (chairs), Damien Gernay (furniture), Studio Krjst textile) and Michaël Verheyden (furniture) will be presented for the very first time in a scenography conducive to reveal the singularities of their pieces and in this way gain recognition for their work.
