This gouache on paper, "The Death of Romeo & Juliet" is the original artwork Salvador Dalí used to create the 1975 print portfolio for Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. It depicts Romeo and Juliet's souls ascending from their corporeal bodies to the altar of death, where they face each other and are married by death. The scene is embraced by Dali himself, in the form of the crown, a known signature Dali employed. We are also reminded this is a play, by Dali's inclusion of red drapery framing the scene. This gouache is the second to the last of the ten works originally created, followed by Romeo & Juliet's souls ascending to the angels.
