Fortuney was an expert in the handling of pastel, very fashionable in the Belle Epoque, and excelled at making velvety fabrics and complexions. Beside a very Parisian inspiration, he displayed in his marines and port scenes sketched on the spot an incisive force, which contrasts with the virtues of his genre scenes. We owe him many views of landscapes of the Riviera and our pastel is a perfect instance. He was a friend of Renoir and painted with him in the south of France, in Cagnes-sur-Mer.
