Oil on board signed "JD" & located "Compiègne" lower left. The Compiegne national forest in the Oise department is located an hour from Paris south-east of Compiegne city. Provenance :n°32 sized 31x50cm of the Paul Chevallier Auction catalogue of Jules Dupré workshop 30-1-1890 under the expertise of Galerie Georges Petit (p29). Private family collection near Paris & Bordeaux - Never in auction since 1890. Dupré is related to the Barbizon school, although he painted there sporadically. Although Vincent van Gogh and Jules Dupré probably never met during Vincent Parisian stays, his whole lifelong admiration, close to veneration, for the work of his elder brother. About 60 mentions are identifiable, over 15 years, in the correspondence of van Gogh to his brother Théo. These letters contain feverish descriptions of works by Dupré that he could see. For him, Dupré embodies the soul of French Romanticism & he associates his name with that of Victor Hugo...
