Émile Dominique ROUX (1822-1915) c.1856 "Group of Arabs on the sea shore with feluccas”- Probably Constantinople. Oil on wood board (probably mahogany) signed on bottom left part. His rare Orientalist paintings –obviously made between 1856 to 1867 during his naval officer trips- are the most popular. Works at the Museum of Rochefort. Born in Vannes in Brittany, unrelated with the Roux family of Marseille, he made a great career in the Navy, finishing rank of admiral. He figured in the Salon with watercolors on his travels which were generally small formats, easily transportable. Naval Inspector in February 1867, in 1868 he directed the staff of the Minister of fleet movements and maritime operations within the Department of the Marine and Colonies, being so orderly officer in the Imperial Navy French.
