Watercolour & Ink on thick paper from a private collection Paris. Probably one of the preparatory studies for the famous painting of 1836 kept at the National Museum of the Palace of Versailles which represents King Napoleon at the battle of Jena with Murat & Berthier. An exceptional work forming part of the genesis of this emblematic painting which certainly gave rise to other sketches. Signed as an engraving, it presents the complete and completed composition of the final work. Berthier is though less visible and the watercolouring is unfinished on the young grenadier of the Guard on the right. The composition is identical in every way down to the smallest detail to the final painting, which corresponds to the interest and the care taken by King Louis-Philippe in following up the orders he placed with the artists, especially for the Galleries. historic Versailles. The artist certainly submitted his composition to him before transposing it onto the final canvas.
