Cramer first exhibited photographs in 1936 at the Albany Institute one year before. In 1937, he established the Woodstock School in the 35mm film format of 35mm which shows his dynamism & interest in new technics. But he never forgot his interest in painting & occasionally returned to it. Our painting shows that beside his interest in abstract styles and automatic techniques, Cramer kept on mixing a realist still life with an abstract symbolist background. This is well illustrated when comparing with two other still lifes dated 1928, 9 years sooner before involved in photography. They are 1928 Bouquet in White Vase (Oil/panel 50x40cm Bonhams NY 22-11-2016 lot 7) & 1928 Hollyhocks (Oil/cardboard 52,7x33cm Sothebys NY 21-5-2003 lot 41). Despite smaller, they both show a still life with flowers & a comparable symbolist background which produces a dreamy atmosphere. The dominating clear purple in Hollyhocks, really reminds our background colours & figures.
