Credited with inventing the mobile (a term coined by his friend, Marcel Duchamp) Alexander Calderopened up a panoply of new possibilities for sculpture, painting and the relationship between objectand viewer. In his works Calder’s desire was to show his abiding interest in theatricality andperformance, an interest that was sparked through his early experience of the cabaret and the circusin the 1920s, shown through the movement and colors of his compositions. As in his sculpture compositions, like this gouache, he asks us to look afresh at a body of work thatbecause of the general composition is never quite fixed, that moves us and continues to act uponour vision. It is a very paradigmatic work that represent the primary objective in Calder’s works: astyle that could embrace movement and a simple and attractive abstraction.
