Picasso had not visited Greece and did not have Papasawas' roots, but he was influenced by ancient Greek civilisation and in general by the art of the past. "The art of the Greeks, the Egyptians, or the great painters who lived in other times is not an art of the past; perhaps it is even more alive today than it ever was", said Pablo Picasso. The typicality of the couple is combined with the Greek lettering of the signature to testify to the strong link that both the artist and Picasso maintain with ancient Greek art and culture. Papasawas was inspired here by characters from Greek myths, such as nymphs and centaurs, as well as various representations on Attic amphorae.
