1918-20 A Tribute to Cezanne & Mont Sainte Victoire

Precursor of his manner of mixing cubism and expressionism in following years. Like Cézanne, Schiller alternates warm and cold with complementary colours. The cold tones, the vegetation, the green of the tree and its shadow in the foreground, then in the background the blue band of the sea and the mountains against a clear sky. And the warm, light tones, yellow, grey, orange, beige, brown and red. Like the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, whose summit can be made out, the mountain, though far away, seems to be brought into the same plane. As Cézanne, he recreates a perspective effect by playing with colours and shapes, which brings the eye into the middle of the composition. At the top, the mineral kingdom with the mountain, in which the sky and the rocks are reflected and which is underlined by the dark blue sea band. By adding touches of colour, one next to the other, the artist achieves a cameo that makes the volumes vibrate.
