A village house by the seaside with the sea visible on its right part, confirmed by seagulls over the roof on the left center and the silhouette of a ship. On the front right a character is walking with a dog.
“19th January 1885. Up little earlier than usual. Hurried down to work room so as to be there when expressman came with the 1st “Couture” plate which I have been having replaned in N. Y. While fire was coming up I got my things ready to do the 1st biting on the Daubigny and painted some on Mr. Mason’s picture “Memento Mori.”
“21th January 1885. In afternoon went at the Daubigny. Am increasing the character of the sky' & opening the underbitten passages in the rest of the composition. I believe, if my acid does not play me false next time, that it will be interesting.” (The diaries of Charles Walter Stetson 1985 Philadelphia Temple University Press pages 274-275)
