Dériaz chose a lithograph of the city hall in Leuven, Belgium by Adolph Rouarge as his source for this wonderfully accurate hand drawn reproduction. It would likely have been created after 1825 but an exact date cannot be established.
The work shows an everyday market scene in the early to mid 1800s. Ladies and gentlemen gather around the market stalls to haggle over vegetables and other goods.
Dériaz used thin tracing paper to execute this reproduction. That being said, there are areas of incongruity, which suggests he may not have had access to the original long enough to complete his work. There are small differences in the arrangement of some of the market characters, and particularly the buildings to the distance on the right side.
Overall it gives a striking impression and composes a delicate balance between an original work and a faithful reproduction of a master. Framed and ready to brighten up your space.
