An artist’s book (altered book) created from a catalog published by the Institute of Contemporary Art in 2011 on the occasion of Kassay’s solo exhibition of silver-plated canvases and shaped white paintings. Kassay disassembled the binding of the softcover book and then sanded away the text and illustrations, revealing subtle traces of his hand and leaving behind faint scratches and a slight chalky residue on the pages. As an artist whose monochromatic paintings draw inspiration artists such as Robert Ryman and Robert Rauschenberg, it is fitting that this first artist’s book references Rauschenberg’s White Paintings (1951) and Erased de Kooning Drawing (1953).
