Comment
Chagall created his first crucifixion in 1938, “White Crucifixion” now preserved at the Art Institute of Chicago. A second equally striking one belongs to the collections of the Musée National d’Art Moderne Center Pompidou, “The Crucifixion in Yellow”, oil on canvas from 1942.
Our “Christ en jaune” can be related to these historical museum pieces and is part of its allegorical cycle of the misfortunes of war.
