Donald Sultan (Born 1951) came to New York in 1975 and became a prominent artist in the 1980s. He has produced and exhibited a wide range of creative works combining modern and traditional elements, including many still lifes. Several of his early works featured black lemons, referred to in one New York Times article as his "signatory image of poisoned fecundity". In this image the lemon is paired with what appears to be a tulip.
