Contemporary Art Fairs : Frieze [09/10/2005]

With the FIAC having just closed in Paris, the Frieze Art Fair will carry the contemporary art flame for four days starting 21 October. In only three years, this London-based event has managed to establish itself as one of the key meetings for contemporary art lovers and enlightened collectors. Regent’s Park will host the selections of nearly 150 galleries until October 24.

Contemporary art takes centre-stage in London [06/10/2005]

From 21 to 24 October, London’s Regent’s Park will host the Frieze Art Fair. The third edition of this London contemporary art fair will feature over 150 of the most prestigious international galleries worldwide. Bonhams, Christie’s and Sotheby’s are already preparing some very exciting sales of contemporary art timed to coincide with the fair.

FIAC 2005: The French contemporary art market [28/09/2005]

From 6 to 10 October, Paris will celebrate the 32nd edition of the FIAC (Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain). The giant Porte de Versailles exhibition complex will house 227 gallery stands, 99 of which are due to be French. In addition, a number of Parisian auctions houses have organised sales of excellent selections of contemporary art to coincide with the event. The day after the Fiac’s opening celebrations, Sotheby’s will be offering part of a collection belonging to the Durand-Dessert gallery. On 8 October, the auction house Cornette de Saint-Cyr will be selling 179 works, including an important selection from the Fondation Veranneman Collection.

Antoni Clavé (1913-2005) [19/09/2005]

Antoni Clavé died in Saint-Tropez on 30 August, aged 92.From the age of 14, he was involved in set design, illustrations in children’s magazines and drawings for cinema advertisements and posters. In 1930, he enrolled in the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes in his home town of Barcelona, concentrating initially on drawing, advertising and decorative art.

The Lyon Contemporary Art Biennial in numbers [19/09/2005]

The 8th Contemporary Art Biennial in Lyon is open to the public from 14 September to 31 December 2005. Entitled “Expérience de la Durée”, this year’s event exhibits the work of 61 artists and includes 25 pieces commissioned by the organisers. This collection will essentially be displayed at 5 different locations: La Sucrière, the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Institute of Conteporary Art at Villeurbanne, le Rectangle and fort Saint-Jean.

Klimt, Schiele, Moser, Kokoschka is the title of the next exhibition organised by the Grand Palais in Paris and opening on 5 October 2005. Visitors will discover a selection of 50 paintings and nearly 100 works on paper on the core themes of the four Viennese masters: allegories, landscapes and portraits.

A leisurely start to the new season [30/08/2005]

After a particularly successful first auction season in London and New York, the first sales in September will set the tone for the rest of the year. While September’s volumes – according to Artprice data – are traditionally three times higher than in August, they tend to be far outstripped by November/December figures.

The art market is continuing to grow: At a global level, turnover from fine art auctions was up 10.2% year-on-year between 1 January and 18 July, at USD 2.23 billion.

Performance of Artprice’s standardised art market place [01/08/2005]

By 31 July 2005, just five months after its launch, Artprice’s standardised marketplace had hosted a total of 26,701 works of art offered for sale. Their value, excluding a very large number of major pieces offered by sellers at undisclosed prices, totalled EUR 521,754,069.

Prices of fine artworks continued on an exceptionally strong growth trend in the first half of 2005, and logically enough, the general increase in art prices of 4.1% also generated a sharp rise in the number of auction records.

The first half of 2005 proved very eventful for the art market. After several months of high bidding (251 works breached the USD 1 million mark) and a rise in global Fine Art sales turnover of more than 5%, there has been a major change in Artprice’s Top 10 ranking of artists by revenue.

Robert Mapplethorpe in New York [17/07/2005]

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is hosting an important exhibition of the works of the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, which runs until 24 August 2005. Entitled “Robert Mapplethorpe and the Classical Tradition: Photographs and Mannerist Prints”, the exhibition is showing 42 historic etchings and woodcuts from the Hermitage alongside 74 photographs by Mapplethorpe.

Impressive price rise for an Old Master drawing [12/07/2005]

Christie’s London sold an unearthed drawing by the Florentine Renaissance artist, Andrea del Sarto (1486-1530), depicting the head of Saint Joseph, for GBP 5.8 million on 5 July.

Canaletto: two records in two days at the Old Master Paintings auctions [11/07/2005]

At auctions organised a day apart, Sotheby’s and Christie’s offered two magnificent paintings by Caneletto, breaking two records.

Cezanne and Pissarro at the MoMA [10/07/2005]

The MoMA (New York) is presenting a major impressionist exhibition running until 12 September 2005, entitled “Pioneering Modern Painting: Cézanne and Pissarro 1865–1885” in which a selection of 85 works traces the career of these two Impressionist masters. Cézanne and Pissarro first met in 1861 and subsequently worked regularly together in Pontoise and Auvers sur Oise.

While Old Master Paintings are changing hands at the London auctions, collectors can simultaneously find a broad selection of Old Master paintings on the Artprice marketplace. [29/06/2005]

The Artprice marketplace currently has 243 Old Master paintings on offer at an average price of EUR 94,110. Although pre-19th Century paintings only represent 3% of the works on offer on Artprice’s standardised marketplace, the selection is of a very high quality.

Old Master Paintings: views of Venice at the forthcoming London sales [28/06/2005]

The traditional and prestigious London sales of Old Master Paintings at Sotheby’s and Christie’s will take place on 7 and 8 July. The auctions will be dominated by 18th Century Italian paintings.

Art prices have risen sharply in recent months reaching a sliding annual growth rate of 15.8% in euros (+18.1% in dollars). By comparison, the average annual growth rate in euros recorded by Artprice over the July 1994-June 2004 period was only 3.7%!

Excellent results at the Impressionist and Modern Art sales organised by Sotheby’s and Christie’s of London [23/06/2005]

This season’s Impressionist and Modern Art sales held in London proved an outstanding success. Four new records were set on 20 June at Sotheby’s evening sale, which generated close to GBP 46 million for a total of 37 lots.

This year the month of June is offering art collectors and dealers an extremely busy schedule of artistic gatherings across Europe. The key events are the Venice Biennale, and the Basel Art Fair.The 51st Venice Biennale will open to professionals on 9 June and to the public on 12 June. In 2003, the 50th edition of this magnificent exhibition of contemporary art attracted more than 260,000 visitors.

Is France’s contemporary art market in crisis? [07/06/2005]

On 9 May 2005, François Pinault abandoned his plans to turn Renault’s old factory site in Boulogne-Billancourt into a contemporary art foundation. Worn down by bureaucratic obstructions, he opted instead to take his collection to Venice’s Grassi Palace. It was one of precious few cultural projects in France not to rely on public subsidy and would have created a rival for London’s Saatchi gallery and a great opportunity to promote French contemporary art.
